40 Years of Progress and Partnership: The Evolving Story of Cioffredi & Associates
– Kate Leiser PT, DPT, OCS
Forty years ago, Cioffredi & Associates began as a small, one-person practice built on a simple idea: people heal best when care is skilled, thoughtful, and personal. While tools, technology, and scientific understanding have advanced dramatically since then, these core principles remain unchanged.
Few people have witnessed this evolution as closely as husband-and-wife team Konrad Kenkel and Jocelyne Kolb, longtime patients whose experiences with physical therapy stretch back decades—before our practice even existed. I had the opportunity to catch up with them this summer to hear their perspectives on the evolution of our practice over the last 40 years, as well as the profession of physical therapy itself.
A Lifetime of Back Care, and a 40-Year Partnership
Konrad’s relationship with physical therapy began as a teenager in Germany in 1957, following a severe spinal injury and fusion surgery. Rehabilitation at the time was precise but sometimes rigid: exercises without explanation, improvement but not necessarily through partnership. Physiotherapists at that time, both in Germany and here in the United States, operated under the direction of physicians rather than as independent providers.
Decades later, when Konrad was referred to Bill Cioffredi, PT, he encountered something different—care built around listening, problem-solving, and clear communication. Over the last 40 years, as our practice moved, grew, and added new clinicians and services, Konrad’s back has remained a complex challenge. And through it all, he and Jocelyne have been part of our story.
Their long view offers insight into not only the growth of our practice, but the evolution of the profession itself.
A Practice Built on Personal Connection
From their earliest visits, Konrad and Jocelyne found that what distinguished Cioffredi & Associates was the quality of the human interaction. Therapists didn’t just guide exercises—they asked questions, explained the reasoning behind each step, and made space to understand the person, not just the injury. As Jocelyne put it:
“Everyone is not only competent, but personable and friendly. You know you’re in good hands.”
This blend of professional skill and genuine connection shaped their experience as much as any technique or tool. It became the foundation for a long-standing therapeutic relationship.
Evolving Techniques, Consistent Clarity
As Konrad continued to work with the practice, he witnessed firsthand the progression of physical therapy—from early equipment and traditional methods to more sophisticated treatments and a deeper understanding of how the body heals. What stood out to him was not just the advancement itself but how it was integrated.
Each time a new approach was introduced, therapists took care to explain:
- what it was,
- why it mattered, and
- how it fit into the plan.
This commitment to clarity created a sense of partnership that has remained consistent throughout his care.
A Growing Team and Broader Scope
As the profession expanded, so did the practice. Over the years, Cioffredi & Associates grew to include clinicians with specialized expertise, complementary wellness services such as massage and personal training, and educational resources to help patients build healthier habits outside the clinic.
Jocelyne especially appreciated seeing former trainees return as fully credentialed clinicians. Their return added continuity and strengthened the sense of community that patients feel when they walk through the door.
This broadened scope allowed the practice to support patients more holistically while staying rooted in its person-centered philosophy.
Integrating Mental and Physical Well-Being
Another change Konrad and Jocelyne observed over time was the evolving recognition of the emotional and psychological dimensions of physical recovery. As Konrad has aged—now 87—some physical challenges have been accompanied by natural moments of frustration or uncertainty. Talking openly about these experiences with his therapist has been a vital part of his care.
Jocelyne noted that restarting PT after difficult stretches—such as chemotherapy or a prolonged case of shingles—provided not only physical improvement but also a renewed sense of energy and confidence.
Konrad summarized a truth many of us really need help and guidance to understand:
“It’s difficult to accept physical limitations as we age, and being able to talk about this with my physical therapist is valuable. In a way, it’s learning to accept that we may not be the way we used to be.. but by doing that you’re also able to make progress and do more.”
A Welcoming Environment
Beyond techniques and outcomes, Konrad often remarked on the atmosphere of the clinic. Visiting, he said, feels “almost like coming home.” Warm greetings, familiar faces, seasonal events, and the continuity of relationships all contribute to a setting where patients feel at ease.
These seemingly small details help create a therapeutic environment that encourages people to relax, participate fully, and stay engaged in their care and with the people around them.
Advice for Those Unsure About Beginning Care
When asked what they would say to someone hesitating to begin physical therapy, Jocelyne and Konrad offered simple, practical advice shaped by decades of lived experience.
- “Go to Cioffredi – I’m a great believer in physical therapy. I know I am a great believer because of the experience I had, and the experience Konrad has had” – Jocelyne
- “You need to take care of your body…Be aware of what your body is doing, what it can do, and have the courage to see the physical therapist and see ‘what else can I do?’” – Konrad
Looking Ahead
As Cioffredi & Associates enters its fifth decade, the practice continues to evolve—expanding our knowledge, strengthening our team, and refining our approach. Yet the principles that guided our beginnings remain central: personalized care, clear communication, and a commitment to helping each individual reach their fullest potential.
