For Kicks
-Alison Griffin
At 41, Alison Griffin is an active soccer player. “I try to play twice a week… It’s my happy place!” She’s used to self-treating the odd injury here and there, but last year, after an in-game knee collision, she found that she couldn’t keep playing through the pain like usual…
“I mean, after four natural birth children, I think I have a pretty high pain tolerance… When you’re playing, you just keep playing through it, right? But then my knee started aching when I was driving. It would just ache all the time and I would cringe every time I had to take a step.”

“[Soccer] is my happy place, like where I get my healthy dose of therapy.”
“I had a lot of fear that I had damaged it and that I was going to further damage it, so I stopped playing. I stopped everything. I’ve never been one to not exercise or do strengthening… It turns out it’s not very good for my mental health. I get grouchy when I don’t play! It’s my happy place, like where I get my healthy dose of therapy.”
“So when I came in here, I was really weak. I knew I needed to build back up, but I was so nervous and I didn’t have the confidence to… This was actually my first time doing PT. I was quite a skeptic because I have a sports background, like in anatomy and training, and I thought like, ‘I don’t need it.’ But, it worked! It’s been really, really great. I was held accountable and given the confidence I needed to get back.”
“The plan is to stay strong and play as long as I can.”
Alison is now back to playing soccer multiple times a week at pickup games and leagues across the Upper Valley!
