The Secret to Sleep

70 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep problems with 30% of Americans getting less than six hours of sleep per night. Sleep is essential to the proper functioning of our immune systems and helps mitigate the effects of stress on our body and mind. Given all of the external stressors of today’s world, it’s important to maintain quality sleep habits in order to manage your health, happiness, and wellbeing.

What happens when you are sleep deprived?

Mental Health: Fatigue, irritability, loss of concentration, anxiety forgetfulness, depression and burn-out.

Physical Health: Long-term sleep deprivation is linked to many of the leading causes of death and health issues in the US including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, heart attack, stroke, neurocognitive disease, cancer and hypertension. Your risk of injuries or accident increases by 40%.

Why does sleep help your body?

Sleep is a rejuvenating process. Cells grow and repair and hormones regulate to influence blood sugar and immune system functioning. Healthy sleep improves brain and cognitive functioning, including memory. Most of our bodily tissues and physiological systems are enhanced significantly by healthy sleep. In addition, healthy sleep improves performance, mood, our response to stress, and our overall aging process and life expectancy.

What is healthy? Generally speaking, healthy sleep for most adults consists of at least 7.5 hours of consistent sleep, not including time spent winding down.
