“Wake”-Up Call

Billy Cioffredi, PT Embraces New Challenges After A Water-Skiing Injury

Cioffredi & Associates Founder, Billy Cioffredi, PT

It was the opening day weekend of our family reunion at the lake house. We’d gotten out water skiing and wake boarding with a lot of smiles going around. Just before leaving for home, I asked two of my sons-in-laws to take me out to get back up on my single slalom ski. It had been some time since I was last on the water and I was jazzed up to go. I gave a thumbs up: “Let ‘er rip!” With the boat being virtually empty, it accelerated rapidly from a dead stop. As I let my body get up over the top of the ski, there was a crack and sudden tearing sensation along the length of the back of my left thigh. I knew immediately it was a severe injury and MRI later confirmed: One of the three hamstring attachments was torn off the bone, the remaining two had high grade tears at the muscle and tendon attachment, and there was a lot of internal bleeding. It sounded as violent to me as the pain in my leg, and I began mentally prepping for surgery.

In the meantime, I did some research. Two or three complete tears were a requirement for surgery. One complete tear plus two… Well, I didn’t know. But the literature was clear: If I was to have it, surgery should be completed within the first four weeks. Later, I met up with some friends, one of whom had gone through a very similar injury. She chose to not have surgery and still got back to all of her desired activities including running, though she warned me that option had taken a full year of hard work. For my decision, her husband asked me, “What do you want to be able to physically do once you rehabilitate this injury?” The answer was easy. I wanted to be able to continue hiking with my wife.

Looking for consensus with this goal in mind, I conferred with my Sports Medicine team who recommended the non-surgical route. So that’s what I‘m doing. The first two weeks were really ugly, but I began to notice enough improvement that I believed I would be able to recover with a serious commitment to rehab. My staff made time for me in their already very busy schedule and I took one of our electrical stimulators home to use twice a day. Now at one month out, I can finally walk without a limp and I am fully embracing this experience as a patient.

“Many folks in my age range may suffer an injury, illness, or surgery that knocks them down on top of a natural decline in strength and physical capacity. We CAN get all the way back to where we were physically if we work diligently though.”

A month shy of 67, I’ve always thought of myself as rather healthy and fit, but I realize now that my true strength had dropped off as I hit the start of my 7th decade. Many folks in my age range may suffer an injury, illness, or surgery that knocks them down on top of a natural decline in strength and physical capacity. We CAN get all the way back to where we were physically if we work diligently though. In my case, I will need more than that. If I want to enjoy a continued vibrant, active life of skiing and hiking with our growing family, I will need to blow past my previous fitness level, getting up closer to my peak fitness.

For now, my body is working very hard to heal and there still is a ways to go. My friend is probably right; it may well take me a year of staying at it so the MINDSET IS KEY: Avoid going down the road of feeling sorry for yourself, embrace the situation, and plow ahead. And like the many other patients who share their stories in our newsletter, I too feel very thankful to have the generous support of my good friends, community, and skilled team to help along the way.

Best wishes,
